Islamic Perspective on Caring for Orphans

Caring for orphans is one of the greatest acts of kindness and charity in Islam. The Holy Qur'an and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ repeatedly encourage believers to protect, honour, and care for orphaned children.

Allah says:

"And they give food, despite their love for it, to the needy, the orphan, and the captive."

(Qur'an 76:8)

Allah also says:

"They ask you what they should spend. Say: Whatever you spend of good should be for parents, relatives, orphans, the needy, and the traveller."

(Qur'an 2:215)

The Qur'an further reminds believers:

"So as for the orphan, do not oppress him."

(Qur'an 93:9)

And warns against neglecting them:

"Have you seen the one who denies the Judgment? It is he who drives away the orphan."

(Qur'an 107:1–2)

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

"I and the one who cares for an orphan will be together in Paradise like these two."

(Sahih al-Bukhari)

He joined his index and middle fingers together.

The Prophet ﷺ also said:

"The best house among the Muslims is the house in which an orphan is treated well."

(Sunan Ibn Majah)

Supporting orphaned children is a beautiful form of Sadaqah Jariyah (continuous charity). The rewards continue as the child grows, learns, succeeds, and positively contributes to society.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also said:

"When a person dies, all their deeds come to an end except three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them."

(Sahih Muslim)
